OnePlus 12 Display

The OnePlus 12 has evidently pushed boundaries particularly in its display department. While the OLED screen now spans 6.8 inches, slightly larger than its predecessor, it maintains a subtle curve at the edges, bucking the trend of fully flat screens in the industry. Like previous OnePlus flagships, it boasts LTPO technology, dynamically adjusting the refresh rate from 1 to 120Hz for a seamless scrolling experience.

What sets the OnePlus 12 apart however,  its remarkable brightness. Although advertised at a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, achieving such levels may prove elusive. Nonetheless, such lofty claims are feasible albeit under specific conditions.

The discrepancy arises in the measurement of brightness: manufacturers typically gauge the maximum brightness of individual pixels, while our reviews, along with others, assess brightness across the entire screen. In our testing, we recorded a maximum brightness of 1,120 nits with a fully white display. Conversely, the minimum brightness of 1.8 nits provides a broad range of luminance. With a color temperature of 6,464 Kelvins, the OnePlus 12 screen defaults to impressive accuracy.

The display of the OnePlus 12 is safeguarded by Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a testament to its durability. Continuing its tradition, OnePlus includes a basic TPU screen protector pre-installed for added protection.

In addition to its impressive brightness the OnePlus 12 boasts exceptional color accuracy. With 2,160Hz PWM Dimming, users can expect a nearly flicker-free display experience, minimizing eye strain. The inclusion of BOE single-pixel calibrating technology ensures each sub-pixel is individually calibrated, resulting in precise image reproduction.

The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner integrated into the display is both swift and accurate, granting instant access to the device with minimal need for re-scanning. For even quicker access, a facial recognition feature is also available, although it may sacrifice some level of security.

OnePlus 12 Camera

The OnePlus 12 introduces a fresh 50MP main camera featuring Sony’s latest camera sensor, the LYT-808, part of the same sensor family as the LYT-T808 found in the OnePlus Open, renowned for its superb image quality and overall camera performance. However, unlike the OnePlus Open, the OnePlus 12’s LYT-808 sensor is not stacked, making the former technically better equipped.

Enhancing the main camera experience, the OnePlus 12 offers a slightly wider 23mm lens with a faster f/1.6 aperture, promising impressive low-light performance.

In addition to hardware upgrades OnePlus has implemented various software and image processing enhancements. A new HDR algorithm ensures superior image processing in scenes with extreme lighting conditions. Leveraging AI, OnePlus claims its HDR processing intelligently adjusts edits for a more natural outcome.

The ultra-wide camera sees a modest increase in megapixels from 48 to 50MP, although this doesn’t result in significant image quality improvements. However, the ultra-wide angle on the OnePlus 12 is slightly narrower than its predecessor, offering a 114-degree field of view compared to the OnePlus 11’s 115 degrees. Autofocus functionality now operates from a mere 3.5cm, enabling close-up macro shots.

Most notably, the OnePlus 12 marks the return of a telephoto camera with 3X optical zoom, a feature absent since the OnePlus 7 Pro. While not as impressive as the 5X periscopes found in other flagship devices like the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Galaxy S24 Ultra, and Pixel 8 Pro, it marks a welcomed addition to OnePlus’ camera lineup.

OnePlus 12 Performance

The OnePlus 12 is powered by the impressive Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, the latest cutting-edge processor making its way to numerous Android flagships in 2024, including the Galaxy S24 Ultra and several upcoming models.

Performance-wise, the chipset certainly lives up to expectations. Surpassing 6,000 points in the multi-core Geekbench test showcases the OnePlus 12 as a formidable flagship. Additionally, achieving over 2,100 points in the single-core test signifies its ability to handle everyday tasks with ease.

However, benchmarks only paint part of the picture. In real world usage, the OnePlus 12 proves to be exceptionally responsive effortlessly tackling various tasks. Gaming performance is particularly noteworthy, boasting consistently high frame rates across most titles we tested. While the device may warm up during extended gaming sessions, throttling is minimal, ensuring a consistent and enjoyable gaming experience.
